Sonic CrossWorlds is pretty good. Usually Sonic racing games tend to come up with stuff to mechanically differentiate themselves from Mario Kart, but on paper this is the Sonic Racing game that is the most 1:1 copy of Mario Kart. But the second to second gameplay feels very different, it feels less like driving and racing and more like spending every second doing a trick or a drift or dodging an obstacle.
It’s really satisfying to play, although mindless in a way that not even Mario Kart could be.
It is very chaotic. Mario Kart World, by comparison, is a really chill game, a lot of it is very calming; CrossWorlds however is TikTok the game. Every 30 or so frames something is happening.
At first after watching the promotional footage Sega and other outlets have posted, I was worried that the sense of speed would be worse than Transformed, because of the low FOV. But in practice, you are kept so busy it doesn’t matter that you are going kinda slow. After a bit of practice, it feels really fast.
I love the energy of the game and all the Sonic fan service, from Sonic Adventure 2 all the way to Sonic and the Secret Rings.
Sega clearly is putting a lot of work into this game. I do wish they had costumes for the characters, though. After playing a ton of MK World, seeing 5 identical Shadows in a race threw me off.
After three days of the Network Test, it did have a couple of issues dealing with matches timing out or crashing, but the game seems like its shaping up well. Definitely worth checking out how it reaches the finish line.
